The Reason Real Madrid Have 'Utter Confidence' in Youngster Thiago Pitarch
When an 18-year-old creates Real Madrid history in a key Champions League match against City, it inevitably draws acclaim and the spotlight.
In only his maiden start in the competition - and fifth game for the club - Thiago Pitarch made a strong impression as the fifteen-time Champions League winners claimed a 3-0 round of 16 first leg lead at the Santiago Bernabeu.
The teenager, who also had his Real debut in the play-off round a few weeks prior with a cameo off the bench at Benfica, then assisted Los Blancos defeat the English champions in Tuesday's return to secure a last eight place.

A Meteoric Rise From La Fabrica

He signed for Real from CD Leganes in 2023, having previously been with Atletico and Getafe academies, and initially featuring for the under-19 side, where he rapidly created a positive impact.
Pitarch worked his way up to the reserve side and it was in a pre-season game in which they faced the academy's first team, then coached by the former defender, where the teenager is said to have drawn the eye of the current Real boss, who took over from the previous coach in the new year.
Spanish media would later describe the moment as "an instant connection," adding Pitarch excelled not only for his skill on the ball, but for the vitality, character and drive he brought to the team.
'His Greatest Quality Is His Personality'
In the summer of 2025, former boss Xabi Alonso invited the youngster to train with the senior squad and gave him minutes in pre-season.
Yet, it was the change in manager that became the defining moment in his career as he was introduced as a second-half replacement in both ties against the Portuguese side that led to the meeting with Manchester City.

"I've just achieved my ambition with the greatest club in the world and in the top tournament."
Given a starting debut in La Liga against Getafe - where he was for several seasons after arriving from Atleti in 2018 - he has retained his place for the following four as fitness issues to Jude Bellingham and Ceballos created an opportunity.
Pitarch has seized it with displays that have defied his youth and experience.
"He's a extremely fast player, and you can observe what he's capable of," said the coach. "He is incredibly dynamic, with great endurance, effort and mobility."
The player's mindset has also stood out to his manager.
"His standout trait is his character," added Arbeloa. "He constantly demands the ball, and even under pressure, he remains unfazed.
"I understand fans might be astonished to see him make his debut in a Champions League match, but he's playing because I had complete confidence in him to perform what he usually does.
"Thiago will continue to get chances with the main squad. It is delightful to coach a talent like him."
