The Lions of Teranga's Emerging Star Camara: Starting from Aspirations to Tournament Favorites.
When I enter the space, the young midfielder picks up a football he won’t let go of throughout the conversation. It’s a simple visual metaphor for a dream he has never let slip. “I only wanted football; I was focused solely on that,” states this Monaco and Senegal playmaker.
His resolve and natural ability won over teams such as Metz, Monaco, and Génération Foot. However, the most difficult person to convince was not a club executive or manager, it was from his dad. “He was against me to play football simply because he hadn’t seen me play,” says Camara.
Surmounting Initial Obstacles
In time, on “a special day,” he received his dad's approval to chase his career in the sport. A further barrier was his small stature, which discouraged local club Casa Sports from offering him a contract.
Nevertheless, the famed academy – the institution that nurtured talents including Sadio Mané, Papiss Cissé and Ismaïla Sarr – saw his potential instantly. After Camara was named the best player in a regional tournament, the scouts were “astonished” to learn he was without a contract. They acted quickly. “They took me directly to the training centre. They prevented me from going back home,” Camara said.
An Unforgettable Year and Continental Breakthrough
That decision set him on a trajectory to Europe. A defining period was 2023, “a year to remember,” which began with him lifting the African Nations Championship. Just weeks later, though tired, he competed in the Under-20s Afcon, leading his country to victory and being named player of the tournament.
A month later, he signed for FC Metz, following in the footsteps of Mané. “Adapting was never a challenge,” states the 21-year-old. He resides by himself in Europe, a situation his family support to maintain his concentration.
Influences and Playing Style
Distractions aren't a problem for Camara, who draws inspiration from the Belgian maestro's “humility” and exceptional playing qualities. He is also a huge fan of midfielders such as Fede Valverde, Toni Kroos, and his international teammate Idrissa Gana Gueye.
His powerful shot and accuracy from set pieces are notable assets. Camara confesses he must to temper his aggression, having been shown red early in his tenures at each French club. “It's a trait I carry with me!” he quips.
Monaco, Mentors and Future Ambitions
At Monaco, he cherishes learning from teammates like Denis Zakaria and especially Paul Pogba. “When I heard Monaco were interested in Pogba, I told myself we are really lucky,” he said.
Currently, his focus is firmly on the Afcon tournament with Senegal. “We are the favourites – there's no denying it. After defeating England in their own country…,” he states, pointing to a memorable 3-1 win in Nottingham.
Regarding a future move to the Premier League, he is focused on Monaco for now. “I feel really comfortable here,” he insists. He is frequently teased by icon El-Hadji Diouf about Camara's two Africa Young Player of the Year awards. He laughs, yet remains determined about targeting the senior Africa Player of the Year down the line.
“The pressure is on us – we can’t hide from that. If you beat England at Wembley… it gives you belief.”
Moving forward, Lamine Camara blends humble beginnings, steely determination, and big dreams as he aims to guide Senegal to Afcon success and forge his own legendary path in the world of football.
