Just as bad weather tore through the northern region the night before, Manchester City overwhelmed the visitors away at the Etihad Stadium. It was a statement three-nil triumph for Andrée Jeglertz’s side thanks to goals from Knaak, Shaw and Lauren Hemp. It was a performance that firmly established their leadership claims as they strengthened their place at the WSL pinnacle.

Successive Defeats for United

This result represented back-to-back league setbacks for the United manager's side for the first time since May 2024, placing them a sizable gap off the table toppers with their championship aspirations in serious doubt.

The Red Devils' ability to juggle domestic and continental soccer with a thin squad has been a frequently analyzed topic since they secured entry to the UCL. Looking at the schedule, it always appeared this was the period that would truly test this fortitude. Regrettably for the away side, they appeared weary from start to finish, the memorable win against PSG clearly having left its mark.

Lineup Adjustments

The United manager had tried to rotate the squad with a several adjustments. Ella Toone, Terland, Janssen and Galton all provided energy, although the omission of the high-performing Melvine Malard to the sidelines caused surprise.

The hosts, in comparison, have no similar workload concerns. Jeglertz made one adjustment from the previous win over the Toffees with Lauren Hemp making her return to the lineup since healing from a physical setback.

Overpowering Start

The trouble started to gather for Skinner and his squad from the first whistle. This was a demonstration of the quality from Manchester City whose dynamic attack played with and dismantled the opposition with a sublime first half display that saw them score three goals in under half an hour.

This left the home team completely dominant and saw the visitors disorganized. In advance of this match, the away side had allowed just a handful in this domestic competition but they collapsed in the wake of City’s offensive ingenuity.

Initial Opportunities

The early indicators came soon when Vivianne Miedema used her physicality to bundle Julia Zigiotti off the ball, only to pull her shot wide. The Red Devils had several sorties forward, their straightforward approach giving them alternatives in the wide areas but they could not test the City goalkeeper. City, in the meantime, controlled the ball, probing their opponents and trying to lure them of their structure.

Goals Galore

They turned chances into goals with almost half an hour played when Fujino won the home team a set-piece. A cross to the far post was headed across goal by Bunny Shaw for Knaak to nod home. It was Manchester City's seventh headed goal of the term.

A short time later, they had a third after a rapid shift in the ball saw Lauren Hemp given the opportunity to drive a shot home from outside the box.

After the Break

The primary adjustment came from Skinner at the break as Malard was introduced for Terland but by this time it was futile to change the course of the match. Ex- Manchester City player Jess Park came closest, striking the upright, but the away team were creatively abject and did not manage to record a one shot on goal.

The hosts, meanwhile, could have added to their lead when a delightful Vivianne Miedema long ball sent Shaw away only for her to fluff her lines but it did not affect the result to the hosts. Previously unable to defeat any side who ended above them last season, the manager's side now have wins against the Gunners and Manchester United to put them in a commanding position after nine games.
