Prison Surprise: Brazil's FormerPresident Jair Bolsonaro Faces Life in Prison
He fought justice and justice triumphed.
A couple of months following being handed a quarter-century plus sentence for seeking to “destroy” Brazil’s political system, ex-president Jair Bolsonaro now appears jail-bound.
Anticipated Jailing
The found-guilty instigator – who had been living under house arrest in his residence while a number of legal procedures and appeals play out – is widely expected to be incarcerated in the near future, during increasing talk that he will be transferred to a infamous high-security prison.
Previous Statements on Inmates
Throughout Bolsonaro’s 40-year time in politics, the far-right ex- military man showed minimal compassion for the country's jailed individuals.
“For what reason must we give those dirtbags a comfortable existence?” he once mused. “They deserve to be messed, full-fucking-stop. That's my view.”
In another instance, Bolsonaro stated: “If you don’t want to wind up in prison, you simply need is not sexual assault, kidnap or theft.”
Incarceration Facility Debate
But the idea of Bolsonaro himself winding up in the Papuda top-security prison in Brasília has horrified supporters, several of whom this week toured the facility in an apparent attempt to discourage the high court from banishing him there.
The senator, a senator from Bolsonaro’s Liberal party who was among that group, claimed he expected the elderly figure to be incarcerated in the following week and a half and worried his location could be Papuda.
Lucas claimed Bolsonaro’s severe gut ailments – the result of a life-threatening knife attack during the 2018 presidential election race – meant it would be hazardous to keep the one-time head of state there. “His condition is very grave. He cannot to handle it if they move him to Papuda … It would be dreadful,” he added, who also expressed concern about cramped cells and the condition of inmate food.
During his tour Papuda, Lucas recalled seeing cells accommodating 40 inmates: “That’s almost one square metre per prisoner.
“We spoke to the inmates and they grumble, unsurprisingly, of the terrible meals,” remarked the senator.
Backers Voice Concerns
Lucas is not the only voice expressing views ahead of the ex-leader's anticipated incarceration.
Penning in a major daily, another ally, the ex- communications minister Fábio Wajngarten, deplored the “severe” finale to Bolsonaro’s “spotless” political career and claimed Brazil was about to witness “the biggest wrong in its history”.
“This is an injustice that erodes the souls of many of Brazilians,” Wajngarten wrote.
Divided General Opinion
This could be correct due to the significant backing Bolsonaro holds on the conservative side. However his predicted incarceration has also warmed the feelings of millions individuals who think he ought to be imprisoned for plotting to block the incoming president from assuming office – and even plotting to have him murdered.
Reimont Otoni, a representative for the incumbent leader's allied group, said: “No one desires Bolsonaro to be placed in a dungeon. Not a soul wants Bolsonaro to be sent in solitary confinement. Nobody wants Bolsonaro not to be fed or for him to have to sleep on the floor. We wish him to get respectful care – but dignified treatment while incarcerated. He can’t continue being his own prison warden for his lifetime.”
The congressman noted how Bolsonaro backers, who have spent years applauding the harsh conditions of inmates, had unexpectedly become aware to their privileges. “Recently has the conservative fringe – which has always argued that human rights were not for criminals – decided to visit a jail to find out what situations are actually like,” he remarked.
“Bolsonaro is a offender,” the congressman maintained, but that did not mean he earned “humiliating, demeaning handling”.
Possible Prison Environment
Despite speculation that Bolsonaro could be sent to Papuda, which now houses about thousands of inmates, his probable assigned facility seems to be a nearby penitentiary for police officers and other “special” inmates known as Papudinha (Small Papuda).
His potential cell are far more adequate than those in the primary facility, although nonetheless a world away from the opulence Bolsonaro enjoyed while occupying the stunning official residence, about 12 miles away.
Based on reports, the room Bolsonaro could likely inhabit in Papudinha measures about 24 square meters – about the dimensions of vehicle spaces – and contains a 130 square foot WC with a shower and a 130 square foot veranda. “He could be allowed to have a set and also a minibar in his quarters as long as they were donated by his family,” sources stated.
Partisan Responses
He denounced the talked-about proposal to send the ex-president to Papuda as “a type of revenge” on the part of the judicial authority who led Bolsonaro’s coup trial and will decide his outcome in the {
