Nicolas Sarkozy to Pen Jail Diary Documenting His 20 Days Incarcerated

Nicolas Sarkozy plans a personal account next month titled Notes from a Cell, chronicling his time served in custody.

The revelation was made less than two weeks after Sarkozy left prison while his appeal proceeds his conviction related to criminal conspiracy regarding a scheme to obtain presidential race money provided by the regime of Muammar Gaddafi.

Prison Experience: Solitary Musings

“Behind bars there is nothing to see, and nothing to do,” he writes in one passage, implying the book is more about his reflections from isolation as opposed to extensive analysis of the strained and struggling jail system in France.

“I forget silence, not present at the prison, where noise is a lot to hear,” he continues. “The noise is alas constant. Yet, similar to barren lands, inner life grows stronger while incarcerated.”

Court Appearance: Sharing the Struggle

While appealing for release, the former leader participated remotely from inside the facility, characterizing his incarceration as draining. He expressed in court: “I wish to commend the correctional officers, showing great humanity, easing this ordeal tolerable – since it’s deeply troubling.”

“I never imagined that in my seventies, I would end up incarcerated. It’s a trial I must endure. I admit it’s difficult, deeply straining. It affects one every inmate as it’s exhausting.”

Historical Context

Sarkozy, who led the nation for a five-year term, became the inaugural past president from the EU and the initial post-WWII figure of France to be incarcerated.

Prior to imprisonment he declared he would use his time to write a book.

Reading Material

It is not certain if he found the opportunity to review and analyze the volumes he brought with him: a life story of Jesus spanning two books together with Dumas’s work the famous story, a plot where an innocent man is sentenced to jail but escapes to seek vengeance.

Daily Reality

He remained in solitary confinement to protect him in a space roughly 100 square feet featuring a personal bathroom in the Paris jail in Paris. Two bodyguards were stationed in an adjacent room.

Sources mentioned his diet consisted only yoghurts while inside due to concerns prison cuisine could have been tampered with. Options were available to prepare his own meals but refused this, based on unnamed sources. It is uncertain if he will detail his dietary choices.

Defense Viewpoint

His attorney, who visited his client daily while he was in prison, told the release hearing he would be safer outside jail than inside. “There were threats against his life, has heard screaming at night plus rapid actions in a neighbouring cell when a prisoner self-harmed.”

Legal Proceedings

His incarceration began on 21 October when the judiciary gave him a half-decade term on conspiracy charges over a scheme to secure election financing for his 2007 presidential race.

He denies wrongdoing and is contesting the ruling, and a fresh trial planned for early next year.
