New York's next mayor states plans to make his home in historic Gracie Mansion
New York City's incoming mayor, Zohran Mamdani, has decided to live in the historic Gracie Mansion, leaving behind his rent-controlled apartment that was a central issue in his campaign.
An Iconic Home
Built in 1799, Gracie Mansion has served as the official residence for most New York City mayors from the World War II era.
However, Mamdani, for whom rent control is a core policy, was not quick to announce this decision right away following his triumph in November.
"This decision was based on the security of my family and the importance of directing my full attention on enacting the platform on affordability voters voted for," the Mayor-Elect declared in his announcement.
Thanking a Neighborhood
He resided in Astoria, Queens, a district known for its vibrant cultural enclaves and global cuisine.
"To Astoria: my gratitude for demonstrating what is great about New York City," he noted.
"While I may no longer live in the neighborhood, the community will always live inside me and my work," he affirmed.
Political Debate
Throughout his campaign, Mamdani linked his central policy – to freeze the rent – to his personal living arrangements.
Yet his opponents, including ex-governor Andrew Cuomo, challenged Mamdani for remaining in the apartment despite the fact that he came from a prominent family.
Previous Exceptions
Some mayors have opted to reside at Gracie Mansion.
Michael Bloomberg, the billionaire entrepreneur, chose to live in his own townhouse on Manhattan's Upper East Side throughout his three terms, which concluded in 2012.
In his view, Bloomberg felt it could serve as a place for civic gatherings, and championed a major refurbishment of the historic mansion.
A Vastly Different Setting
As he settles into Gracie Mansion sometime around his first day on 1 January, he will find himself in a setting far removed from his previous Astoria digs.
Featuring cream-colored walls, forest green window covers, and bright white balustrades, Gracie Mansion is an ornate structure situated by the East River.
Within, the ground floor of the Federal-style mansion is appointed to reflect the home's historical period.
The property, which is said to has five bedrooms, also has increased security measures to protect the mayor and his family.
Supernatural Speculation
A number of people have claimed that Gracie Mansion also has spiritual residents.
Chirlane McCray, the spouse of former mayor Bill De Blasio, told reporters that they experienced doors opening and closing inexplicably, and the floorboards made strange noises.
Former Mayor Eric Adams was even more convinced. "I don't care what anyone says," he stated in 2022. "The place is haunted in there, man."
Affordable Housing Lifeline
The apartment he is leaving is rent stabilised, meaning the city sets limits on how much landlords can increase rent each year.
New Yorkers consider these apartments crucial resources as the price of rent exceeds what many can afford.
Data indicated Mamdani paid about $2,300 each month for his apartment.
Per figures from the real estate platform Zillow, the median rent for a studio or one-bedroom in New York City is $3,500 a month.
