Manchester United Poised to Sign Germany Striker Lea Schüller away from the Bavarian Giants
The Women's Super League club are on the verge of sealing the deal for prolific Germany striker Lea Schüller in a permanent move away from Bayern Munich.
A Marquee Acquisition for the WSL Side
Schüller, who has six months left on her contract, has been a prolific goal-getter for her club and the national team. Having netted over 100 goals for the German giants and scored 54 times in 82 caps for her country. This signing will be seen as a major signing for the WSL team.
Departure from Bayern has been anticipated after she appeared to be holding back emotions while applauding the club's fans following a victory over Bayer Leverkusen this month.
It was reported in late December that the German women's top flight was losing one of its top strikers. According to multiple sources, the formalities for the transfer are now finalised.
Consistent Goalscoring to Boost the Forward Line
The 28-year-old’s signing is expected to provide a significant uplift to the team's forward line. Schüller has been remarkably reliable in front of goal in the Bundesliga.
- Over seven straight seasons, up to and including the most recent campaign, she achieved at least a double-figures tally of league goals.
- She claimed the top scorer award in the 2021-22 season with 16 goals.
Building Momentum at Carrington
The acquisition of the German international comes at a time when the club seem to be gathering momentum.
Recent performances feature securing a place in the European knockout phase playoffs in a seeded position and a win in the League Cup quarter-finals.
Off the pitch, the winter break has seen further business:
- The acquisition of Swedish defender Hanna Lundkvist on a three-and-a-half-year deal.
- The contract extension for Japanese midfielder Hinata Miyazawa, who has become popular figure since joining in 2023.
Regarding the midfielder's new deal, a club official commented: “Miyazawa is now a critical part to the way we play. Her understanding of the game and skill allows her and the team to dominate play from the middle of the park.”
Lundkvist, who has arrived from a club in the NWSL, said: “You can sense how much they [United] have progressed in the last few years, competing in one of the strongest leagues in the world and now featuring in the top European competition.”
