Line of Duty Announced for 7th Season on BBC
The beloved police drama Line of Duty will make a comeback for its seventh season, announced by the BBC.
A brand new six-episode season written by Jed Mercurio starts production in Northern Ireland in the coming months, according to the production team.
The actress shared her enthusiasm about the return, stating she was "thrilled" about the show's renewal. Her co-star remarked, "How wonderful it is to know that the main trio will be back filming together next year."
The previous season wrapped up in recent years with a finale that drew in more than 17 million viewers. Speculation about a new season have been circulating ever since, but official word only arrived this week.
Fresh Obstacles for The Team
The seventh season begins with the anti-corruption unit no longer existing and rebranded as the new police oversight body, as revealed by production details.
Steve Arnott, Kate Fleming, and Ted Hastings continue tasked to combat corruption within the law enforcement.
Their work "has never been more difficult", and under these circumstances, these officers will take on their "most sensitive case so far."
New Character and Intricate Plot
An additional officer, Det Insp Dominic Gough, portrayed as a charismatic officer known for takedowns of organized crime, faces allegations of abusing his position to become a sexual predator.
Yet, this investigation might serve as a intentional diversion from a bigger threat still operating in the shadows, plot details hinted.
In a statement, Jed Mercurio said: "Everyone involved are deeply thankful to the dedicated viewers."
"It's an honor to have had so many fans track the developments of the unit over multiple series and we couldn't be more delighted to be coming back for a new season."
He added: "Misconduct in this country is supposed to have ended while the series was off air, so I've been forced to use my imagination."
Cast Reactions
The Scottish actor described being part of the series as "the role of a career".
"Not only the program's popularity but the colleagues I've worked with I now call some of my closest friends."
"I'm excited to wear the uniform again and reunite with everyone," he said.
The Nottingham-born actress stated: "It goes without saying I'm very happy the show is back! Eager to work with the creator, Martin and Adrian again. Belfast, we'll see you soon!"
The veteran actor commented: "While anticipating the AC-12 days of Christmas, how exciting it is to know that the central trio will be working together next year."
"Pleased with the news and anticipating those unexpected plot developments."
Show History
The drama launched in 2012 and evolved into a highly successful television series of the last decade, featuring guest stars such as Kelly Macdonald.
Broadcasters has not yet announced exactly the new season will premiere.
The conclusion of season six brought the extended plot about the search for criminal mastermind known as "the mysterious H" to a close, and producers indicated at the moment there were no intentions for further series.
However, the corporation confirmed on this week that a seventh series is now in development.
