Jets Head Coach Glenn Optimistic Kris Boyd Will Make a Full Recovery After NYC Incident

Jets head coach Aaron Glenn revealed that he recently spoke with cornerback Kris Boyd and feels certain the athlete will recover well after suffering a gunshot wound in midtown Manhattan early Sunday morning.

Glenn shared that Boyd, who is hospitalized, was “in good spirits” during their latest talk.

“What reassures me, is that he’s in good spirits,” Glenn commented. “His family, they are holding up and he will walk away from this just fine.”

It remained unclear when Boyd could be discharged the medical facility, where he is reported as in critical but steady condition.

“Not certain at the moment,” he added. “But I will say this, from our conversation, he felt really upbeat. Furthermore, that puts my mind at ease, because of his outlook and he’s talking that way.”

New York police shared surveillance images earlier this week of a suspect in the shooting of Boyd. What prompted the attack is currently under review and police mentioned it remains uncertain if Boyd was the intended victim. There were no additional victims according to reports.

The shooting happened just after 2am on Sunday morning in the area between MSG and Times Square. Boyd, 29, was taken to Bellevue Hospital after sustaining an abdominal gunshot wound, as reported. The perpetrator got away.

Glenn mentioned Boyd has occupied his thinking “a great deal” since learning of the incident. Glenn added that Boyd and his wife just had a child.

“My initial concern, he has a new baby,” Glenn remarked. “I thought of his spouse, considering his child and I hope he recovers fully. And that’s the only thing that really went through my mind.
“A certain process is underway, which I won’t get into, but It is reassuring that he will recover excellently.”

Boyd did not participate in the present campaign, his debut year with New York, after his season was cut short due to injury on mid-August with a shoulder issue that required surgery.

He signed with New York as a free agent in spring and was expected to be a key part of a revamped special teams unit under Glenn and special teams coordinator the special teams coach. However, he got hurt during preseason drills on 2 August and was carted from the field.

Boyd has stayed involved with the squad during the entire campaign while working his way back.

“He remains involved with our activities,” Glenn stated. “In fact, he comes to the games all the time. His commitment is total. To be one of the top special teams players in this league, he’s done a really good job of helping the other guys we have.”

Boyd, hailing from the Lone Star State, played his first four seasons with Minnesota after getting drafted in the seventh round by the Vikings out of the University of Texas in 2019. He signed with the Arizona Cardinals in 2023 and then joined Houston’s practice squad later that season. Boyd agreed to a one-year deal for $1.6 million with the Jets in March.
