The richly complex call of the nightingale is a rare occurrence in England today, however not at this rural location. Previously, a solitary bird could be heard at this remote place in rural Surrey; recently, they were in multiple locations. “We were listening to them chirping all night, from multiple areas,” explains Meg Cookson, chief environmental expert for the Youngwilders. A group of Youngwilders were staying overnight at the site, however the birds were so noisy, “we stayed awake all night,” says an engagement lead. “We were all worn out the next day, but it was so cool.” An expert from the regional nature organization came to help them capture and tag one of the songbirds the next morning, she recalls: “He’d never held a nightingale in his care before. He was teary.”

Rewilding Progresses at This Location

Nature recovery is by its very essence a lengthy business, but at this site at Maple Farm, after only several seasons, the results are already visible, and noticeable. The farm previously served as a haven for horses. Currently it’s a showpiece for the youth-led mission: to speed up ecological restoration, in one of the ecologically impoverished regions in the planet, and to engage the younger generation (18-30-year-olds) with a natural world they are often excluded from, and a environmental emergency they are often unable to halt. Rising temperatures advances, deforestation damages wildlife homes, and yet another international meeting comes to a unsatisfactory conclusion in abroad – so what person could criticize young people for wishing to act independently?

The initiative was premised on the belief that there were individuals prepared to permit a group of young enthusiasts on to their land

“The younger generation is the most informed in terms of nature that there’s historically,” explains the group's co-director, a key figure. They are also “the most emotionally involved in the issues, and have contributed the smallest part to their creation, and, then, are also going to experience consequences the worst as a consequence.”

Revitalization of the Landscape

Today, the initiative is growing across the Britain – and Maple Farm planted the seed, in every sense. “It’s the initial project, and where we established our community,” says a founding member, as she gives a tour of the 30-acre land. “This used to be divided plots,” she states, as we move through overgrown meadows dotted with shrubs, surrounded by established trees. “The main visual change is that we’ve eliminated all the enclosures, a significant length of it, to create the impression like a single landscape.” In the summer, they donned protective gear and cleared significant quantities of invasive plants, an non-native plant that can harm the flesh. “We’ve introduced numerous of bush lines,” says she. “But the main thing is we’ve just let it breathe for a short time. We’ve reduced a large part of grazing pressure and noticed what’s come up.”

Low scrub and hedgerows are a ideal songbird environment, she comments, but today they’re trimming some of the thorny plants to develop a increased range of ecosystems and to link up separate areas of the property. Fresh plantings will take a while to grow, but young trees from the nearby woodland are already taking root in the meadows; the group have been setting up protectors to protect them from grazing deer.

Wildlife Reappears in Large Numbers

There's more than the songbirds – animals is returning in large numbers. This year they’ve seen reptiles, creatures, bats and insects, notes Noah Bennett, as he raises one of their survey equipment (similar to a mat over a depression in the soil). “You get reptiles and wildlife residing under there, but it’s possibly a slightly chilly for them now.” Wild nests, constructed from carved sections of wood and humming with insects, are fixed to some of the woodland. The lack of animals has given invertebrates room to flourish in the overgrown areas. When they came to this summer, says he, “I’d never seen so numerous insects. There were just swarms of them. We were saying, ‘What is occurring?’”

Inception of the Movement

The original Youngwilders – Bennett, Jack, Easton and additional members – united as youth, studying or having an interest in nature. In 2019, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change was indicating that the acceptable threshold of 1.5C of warming was looking out of reach, a prominent figure was spearheading the youth protests for environmental action, and activist Clover Hogan was discussing youth suffering from “environmental stress”. It was also the period of the author's book, Wilding, on how the authors transformed the Knepp Estate from a unsuccessful farm into a flourishing wildlife haven. “We were deeply influenced by the example, but what was the role for the next generation?” says Molly. “So we created a online presence and called numerous of environmental organizations and were asking, ‘Do you sometimes get your estate holders wanting to take action and you are short on capacity?’”

Jack adds the narrative: “Our entire organisation was essentially premised on the idea that there were landowners who were willing to let a bunch of youthful enthusiasts on to their property indiscriminately, to decide on major actions that would change land value
