Is the Entertainment Fading? This Fall of the Goals from Open Play

Football match action
Wolves have scored a decrease of 10 goals from open-play situations than at this stage the previous campaign.

A key narrative of the Premier League this campaign is the reduction of scoring in open-play scenarios and how sides have been scoring increasingly from set-plays as an alternative.

Comparing scoring methods to the initial 11 matches the prior season, we see a drop of 39 goals in open play and an increase of 26 from team set-pieces and penalties, resulting in 13 less overall.

Examining the broader view, the number of shots sides are producing have seen a staggering 370 fewer in open play than this time last time out.

And despite the notable jump in set-piece goals, we've actually seen a mere two extra shots created from these situations outside of spot-kicks, demonstrating the efficiency sides are at devising strategies to convert from dead-ball chances.

Goal Statistics Tell the Tale

301 total goals scored in 110 matches to date works out at 2.74 goals per fixture, if maintained for the entire campaign might be the smallest for five years, back in 2020-21 (2.69 average).

However, only 196 scores coming in open-play averages out 1.78 per fixture and is heading to be the smallest for 16 years, since 2009-10 (1.76 per game).

2009-10 also marks the unique EPL campaign to experience scoring more often from non-penalty set-pieces than the current rate of 0.77 per game (0.79 per game).

Which Teams Bear the Most Responsibility?

Regarding scoring from open play, Wolves have recorded the most significant decline, registering a mere four in their first 11 fixtures, a reduction of 10 than this point last season.

Apart from Wolverhampton, England's top division's drop in open play goals is largely a London phenomenon, with half of the London's seven clubs recording at least five goals fewer from open play than last season.

In fairness, that's largely down to them netting lots of scores at the early stages of last season rather than them having difficulty to score in open play the current term.

Meanwhile Man City have recorded the most significant jump, with all but one of their 23 scores so far arriving in open-play.

Set-Piece Success

Looking at the promoted teams with the teams that went down that they superseded. Play-off champions Sunderland have netted three more scores in open play than Southampton did in their first 11 games on their way to the drop last season.

In terms of scoring from set-pieces (aside from spot-kicks), Arsenal and Chelsea have seen the biggest increase, with both sides making up for the five less goals that they've scored in open play with identical figures from set-pieces.

Manchester United have recorded twice as many scores from set-plays as they managed in the 11 games the previous campaign before Ruben Amorim assumed control, while the Black Cats additionally are more successful at scoring than the club they replaced they superseded.

City appear not to have received the memo about scoring more from set-pieces, because they've recorded three fewer than the previous campaign, as have Forest, although this could be because of the altered approach they're working to install.

Overall Patterns

Six teams – the Gunners, the Blues, the Cottagers, the Magpies, Tottenham and the Hammers – are this term's top trend-setters by netting less scores from open-play and additional from set-pieces, while Manchester City stand as the unique club to defy the pattern to date by doing the exact opposite.

It will be interesting to observe if clubs persist to depend greatly on set-pieces as matches continue or if they find again their general attacking flair and begin converting additional scores in open-play as well.
