Ghostface OG Star Matthew Lillard Is Anxious He Could Ruin the Series with the Seventh Installment.

The long-awaited horror film Scream 7 is scheduled to debut in theaters in the coming year, and it is preparing for a major gathering of familiar faces. This new chapter signals the iconic comeback of Neve Campbell as final girl Sidney Prescott, after sitting out the last entry. She will, as usual, be alongside Courtney Cox as reporter Gail Weathers, but they won't be the only fan-favorite characters making a comeback.

"Coming back to a role you played in your mid-20s when you're 55 was a daunting task that gave me sleepless nights," the actor reveals.

An Unexpected Return for Fallon Characters

Reports have confirmed that three distinct characters from past films are slated to reappear in this latest sequel, even though meeting their demise in previous installments. The precise method of their return is still unclear. Fans should get ready for the return of the beloved and seemingly immortal cop Dewey Riley, the director and Scream 3 killer Roman Bridger, and a member of the original murderous duo, Stu Macher.

The Pressure of Legendary Legacy

For Matthew Lillard, reprising his role in the series for the first time since a brief cameo is a dream come true, even if he is terrified about the audience response. The performer clearly remembers the precise instant he got the offer from the series creator.

"I remember the phone call. I remember the pleasantries. I remember him asking. That instance is permanently etched on my psyche," he states. "So I'm incredibly honored to be back. I'm really excited to be back."

Stu Macher has achieved iconic status in the years since the 1996 movie premiered, which left Lillard feeling very nervous.

"The reality is, that's a part that lives in infamy, like it or not," he notes. "A part that is now represented in every single Ghostface mask that appears every Halloween."

The Anxiety of Letting Down the Fans

Now that production has concluded, Lillard is waiting as everyone else to see the finished film. He admits to feeling immense pressure about hoping not to be the one who damages the popular franchise.

"It's either a hit and people are thrilled to have you, or it's a fail," Lillard points out. "Going into it, I don't know if the film will be successful. I don't know if people want to see me. I've certainly seen plenty of people state and say, 'Stu is dead. Why are they returning to this idea?' So the truth is that I feel a lot of pressure to not mess up the series. I don't want people leaving Scream 7 and saying, 'Well, that was terrible, and Matthew Lillard was the reason.'"

Theories and Anticipation Abound

While countless dedicated fans are excited for Stu's reappearance, the central mystery of how he and the others return remains. Maybe they live rent-free in Sidney's consciousness, like a prior storyline. Or, maybe they are in some way all alive in a bizarre communal situation. The possibility of a self-referential story, inspired by classic horror movies, also exists.

Audiences will find out the answer when Scream 7 arrives in theaters.
