British Designer Antony Price, Famed for Creating Looks for Iconic Acts Like Bowie and Duran Duran, Passes Away at Age 80.
The British designer Antony Price, the groundbreaking British fashion designer behind some of the most iconic looks worn by musical icons like Bowie and members of Roxy Music, as well as Queen Camilla, has sadly died aged 80.
His reputation was built on his defined forms and dramatic aesthetics, including the light-hued ensembles that became famous from the iconic band Duran Duran's landmark music video for "Rio".
"Remembering him as a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' Duran Duran shared a message across their platforms."
His passing follows just weeks after he unveiled his latest collection in London, which was his first major show in over 30 years. The performer Lily Allen modelled a dress inspired by the famous black velvet "dress" historically worn by Princess Diana.
A Pioneering Career
Hailing from Yorkshire, where he was born in 1945, Price relocated to London in the early 1960s to enroll at the prestigious Royal College of Art.
Upon completing his studies, he commenced his career designing men's fashion at the label Stirling Copper and was the creator of the body-hugging, buttoned trousers that rock legend Mick Jagger famously wore during The Rolling Stones' Gimme Shelter tour in the late sixties.
He established his eponymous line in 1979 and held his debut runway presentation a year later. The show opened with outfits on supermodel Jerry Hall, who later wore the marriage dress Price specifically designed for her marriage to Sir Mick Jagger.
Collaborations with Icons
A key creative partner of the late David Bowie, Price designed the memorable jacket the star wore for his "the song As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.
His characteristic talent to blend elements of men's and women's fashion along with his masterful technique in shaping body-hugging looks made him a "one-of-a-kind talent," in the words of the British Fashion Council.
By the 1990s, he started creating ensembles for the then-Duchess of Cornwall, Camilla, such as several ensembles for her tour of the United States following her marriage.
Following a profession lasting over fifty years, Price held his ultimate fashion presentation in London recently in partnership with the design house 16Arlington.
