Afghan Rulers Employed Abandoned British Technology to Track Down Local Nationals Who Worked With Allied Forces, Inquiry Is Told
A confidential source has told the Afghan leak inquiry that the UK left behind classified devices permitting Afghanistan's rulers to identify Afghans who collaborated with international military.
Data Breach Endangers Numerous at Risk
The source, called Person A, stated that people concerned by the data leak were told to relocate and switch their mobile numbers to avoid detection from the Taliban.
Lawmakers are looking into official handling of a catastrophic leak of personal details concerning nearly 19,000 Afghans who had applied to come to Britain to flee the Taliban.
The Information Breach Occurred
An electronic document with their personal data, comprising names, phone numbers and occasionally family information, was mistakenly released by an official employed at special operations center in last year.
The leak was discovered months later, when identities of several individuals who had sought to move to Britain surfaced on social media.

“There seems to be a false assumption that Afghan rulers lack similar capabilities that western nations possess,” the whistleblower testified to MPs.
“We left it all behind in Afghanistan; they have it. Should they obtain mobile details, they can locate your precise location. That's precisely what intelligence groups achieved.”
Under inquiry about regarding if authorities had access to sophisticated technology, the source confirmed: “They have complete capability.”
Consequences of the Information Leak
Preliminary research provided to the committee indicated that at least 49 kin and associates of people concerned by the incident had been killed.
A gag order concerning the breach was enacted in last year and prevented relevant facts concerning it from media reporting until mid-2025.
Safety Measures
Due to legal constraints, the source and the volunteer organization she was working with advised affected households they were assisting that they had “apprehensions that mobile communications had been breached”.
“Our suggestion was that they relocate when possible and altered their mobile numbers. That constituted the crucial data that, should militant forces obtained these details, would result in their location being found,” she said.
Challenged Assessments
The source disputed that government assessment performed by a former official had been mistaken to state that the acquisition of the information by militant forces was “minimally impact an individual's existing exposure”.
“The important fact is that affected people are not standing up to the Taliban; they live secretly. All concerns relate to past work history.”
She detailed horrific abuse endured by at-risk Afghans, comprising electrocution, waterboarding, and violent assaults.
“Instances include toddlers who have had their arms broken to pressure the family to disclose hiding places,” the whistleblower revealed.
